Check-out session totals dropped to 2,219 for the month of May. Monticello borrower numbers are down by 41 since January 1, despite signing up nearly 250 kindergarten students in April. Declining borrower numbers and circulation continues across the region and even the country. Great River is creating a Borrower Workgroup to investigate the reasons for these declines. To date the Monticello Public Library has presented 133 programs for children, teens, and adults with a total attendance of 1,395. We conducted an exhibit at one outreach event with an attendance of 76, and made five presentations at local schools about the summer reading program to a total of 498 students and teachers. There have been 25 class visits at the library with a total number of 672 students. And we provided tours to over 250 kindergarten students in the span of about 3 hours. Programs The four-month-long writing workshops concluded in April with great success. One of the goals of this training was to create a writers club here in Monticello, and that group will be meeting for the first time in June. We have a huge selection of programs available for all ages this summer and are very excited about the new offerings for the summer reading program. Both kid and teen programs have been revamped to be a bit more challenging, but also offering better incentive prizes. We are also trying something new by offering four concerts on the library lawn this summer, most outside of regular library hours. These concerts are supported by Legacy funding. Our “regular” programs like storytime, book clubs for teens and adults, LEGO Club, and R.E.A.D. with Mauer continue to do well. We are working with the city’s Arts Initiative and integrating some of our activities with Sue Seeger. For the planned August street art event, we will be collaborating with the community theater group and local writers to bring stories about Monticello to life. Our Facebook page continues to do well, with 384 followers. Some posts have reached well over 2,000 people, and interaction is growing on individual posts. We are trying to build a community online that provides greater visibility of the library and its services, makes people feel welcome at the library, and eventually becomes a resource for information and contributions. Building/Maintenance Issues We did have some water leakage around one of the windows in the teen area and we reported it to maintenance. There has been no sign of it again since. We seem to be getting more requests for quiet, closed study spaces and access to power outlets. We are also having more requests for meeting space.
