Staff Present: Jeff O'Neill -Deputy Administrator, Kitty Baltos-Director, Kate
Broman-Secretary/Assistant Director
1. Call to order.
Chairman Kendall called the meeting to order at 5:20 p.m. after meeting with the Parks
Board to discuss and develop ideas for the open space on the corner of Linn and W. 61h
Street.
2. Approve the minutes of the March 22, 2001 Advisory Board meeting.
Minutes unanimously approved.
3. Consideration of adding items to the agenda.
Mayor Belsaas suggested discussing the issues involving National Guard Sleepovers.
4. Review and update of previous agenda items.
a. Skate Park fees and oening: Baltos updated Board members on the Skate Park
opening on April 20` — earlier than originally anticipated because of warm
weather.
b. Dishwasher in catering kitchen: Baltos relayed the concern the Senior Center
and Community Center staff has that the dishes are not getting clean after being
run through the dishwasher. The dishwasher currently installed in the catering
kitchen is the largest size possible for our kitchen. The possibility of adding a
garbage disposal to the "rinsing" sink is being discussed as a possible solution.
The cost to install a disposal would be approximately $400 — Community Center
and Senior Center may share the cost. Chairman Kendall said he will follow-up
with the Senior Board to see if they think a disposal would help, and if they would
be interested in sharing the cost of installation.
c. Summer brochure: Baltos updated Board members on the progress of the
Community Center's summer brochure and it's offerings. The brochure will be
inserted in the Shopper on May 21 St, and registration will begin that same day.
Mayor Belsaas suggested getting together with Community Education in an effort
to make better use of talent and community space.
d. Bike Park Update: Baltos updated Board members on funding efforts for the
Bike Park — it's been challenging finding capital funding sources. The City of
Buffalo had Landscape Structures build their park at a discount due to the fact
they are new to building parks. Baltos will contact Landscape Stuctures and see if
they're interested and have any design ideas. It is doubtful that any development
of the park will happen this summer. If the park is built, we will be the only one
in the area.
5. Loitering policy update:
Baltos explained the need for developing and posting a loitering policy. The policy has
been approved by the City attorney and is now posted in all entryways and at the front
desk of the Community Center.
6. Quaterly Financial Summary:
Mayor Belsaas suggested breaking down the Community Center's financial situation into
monthly summaries as well. Baltos explained that the National Guard is supposed to pay
for their own electric, and it would be helpful for them to have their own separate meter.
Also in discussion of the financial summary, Baltos stated that rentals are still on the rise
with March being the best month to date. Program fees are new to the financial summary
this quarter, as we recently started to get our program options up and running. We will
offer a special one -month membership this summer — Baltos will determine a price.
7. National Guard Sleepovers:
Mayor Belsaas mentioned that the National Guard brought up this topic at a recent City
Council meeting. Many issues were brought up that need to be discussed before
sleepovers could be considered a possibility in the Community Center. Belsaas asked
Baltos to review the original agreement between the National Guard and the City, find
out what the National Guards needs are, and then bring the issue back to the City
Council. Baltos will follow-up with Jeff and Rick.
8. Next Meeting:
Thursday, May 24t" at 4:30 p.m.
9. Adiournment:
A motion was made to adjourn the meeting. Motion seconded. Motion was passed
unanimously.
