Also Present:

Great River Library System and Merrill Birch.
1.
Luther Ratto, Media Services Coordinator, Great River Regional Library,
reviewed the audio-visual considerations for the new library. The build-
ing should be designed to accomodate audio-visual materials and services
offered now or projected in the years ahead. Flexibility will be needed
to accomodate new materials and equipment. The building should be such
that electrical sockets are readily available throughout, including some
floor sockets which will be capped until needed. Conduit for closed
circuit or cable television should be installed or easily installed
later.
Merrill Birch assured the board after a review of each specific area that
the building is equipped as per Luther's letter of January 28, 1981 ex-
cept for one floor outlet not originally planned for. Merrill will get
a price on this. Also in question is the location of the congregation of
cabling and the connection panel. At present, this area is located in
the mechanical room. Luther feels that this should be changed to an area
near the main desk so that the TV signal can be easily routed within the
building by the staff. He will look into this further and advise us as
to what is needed to accomplish this.
2.
originally, the Library Project Committee was informed (1-26-81) that the
existing shelving may have to be refinished but could be used in the new
building. The original estimate for interior furnishings was $30,000.
Merrill Birch now feels that shelving will not work and standard inter-
changeable modules would be better. The cost would be approximately
$36,000 for all wood shelving, $30,000 for combination wood-metal shelv-
ing and $27,000 for metal shelving. It was decided to purchase the com-
bination wood-metal shelving. It was also decided to purchase 75% of the
presently recommended shelving now and the remaining 25% at a later date.
Mona, Tedine and Marge will meet to decide which shelving can be ommitted
at this time.*
3.
It was suggested by Merrill Birch that work begin on selecting materials
for the interior. Two members of the board should be appointed to work with
Merrill to make a selection and an alternate. This should be accomplished
within the month for presentation to the board at the next meeting.**
