MINUTES
Monticello Library Board
Thursday, August 11, 1983, 7:00 P.M.
Members Present: Joel Erickson, Warren Smith, Pat Schwarz, Marge Bauer.
Members Absent: Donald Maus, Loren Klein.
1. The minutes of the Library Board meeting held on May 26, 1983, were
approved.
2. Old Business:
a. The Pinewood book borrowing program whereby the Monticello Public
Library borrowed 200 books from Pinewood East and 200 books from
Pinewood West was a huge success. The summer reading program will
end Friday, August 19. At this time the staff is starting to pull
Pinewood books as they are returned by patrons. The books will be
returned to Pinewood by August 22 so that they can be replaced on
their shelves before school starts. Warren will write a letter to
the school administration thanking them for their cooperation.
b. The cement has been poured and the bike rack installed. Joel reported
he has been trying to contact Doerr Brothers concerning the staining
of the cement but at this point has not been able to contact them.
c. Gene Walters has installed the various cabinets in the work room
and the kitchen. We are still waiting for the surrounds for the
vertical file, the table for the copy machine, the desk for the
work room, the two book drops, and the boxes for incoming and
outgoing deliveries.
d. Telephone Recorder Device - Joel looked into the possibility of
obtaining a device whereby all incoming calls would receive the
hours open information while those needing additional information
would receive staff assistance. There is no recorder available
that would give the message and then ring through. The only thing
available would involve another phone line whereby the message would
be given with patrons needing more information being directed to call
another number. It was decided we would stay with the system we
have for the present time.
e. The landscaping and care of the lawn was discussed briefly. Pat made
a motion that ivy be planted along the larger outside walls. The
motion was seconded by Erickson. Passed. We have been informed by
Fairs that additional rock is needed. The rock level should be the
same level as the lawn. Mrs. Fair estimates that 5-6 tons are needed
at a cost of $150 plus labor. It was suggested that money for lawn
care and shrub replacement be put into the budget.

Library Board Minutes - 8/ll/83
f. Warren reported that he had ordered bound copies of the
Monticello Times. The cost would be 1981 - $100, 1982 - $100,
1983 - $60.
g. Loren Klein reported (by phone) that installation of flood lights
on the flag would cost $800 plus the cost of the lights. It was
decided to table this for the time being. Klein also reported
on the Monticello Public Library signs for the outside of the
building. These would cost $2,100 and would be the same as
is on City Hall. Erickson made a motion to purchase these signs.
Seconded by Schwarz. Passed. Bauer was directed to contact Klein
on this.
3. New Business:
a. The budget for the 1984 year is essentially the same as for 1983
except for a few minor changes. The money allotted for the cleaning
