I am still looking for one additional instructor to work on Thursday evening. If I can't find one I will be putting on my suit!! The more I think about it I am looking forward to teaching again!! ® I have hired and now training 6 new lifeguards. I am very excited to be working with these young adults. They are an exciting group and will be an asset to MCC. o Birthday parties have been very slow for August. This I am sure will pick up soon. o We have several special swims planned for early September to get people to the pool and using the facility. Check out our Splish Splash swims!! Program & Event Coordinator -Sara Cahill: 1 am busy gearing up for fall programs. Fitness classes will ramp up again by late September. We will host a couple more Kerumoto nights on Fridays in the Warehouse. Learn to Skate begins in October. The Halloween Kiddie Parade is my next big event. Since we were caught off -guard by double the amount of people last year I have been thinking of ways to get people in the building faster. It should be another fun - filled event for the kiddos! We meet with our Silver Sneakers account manager and she gave us some good ideas for promoting the program. The members who are signed up are really using the facility frequently, which is exactly what we want them to do! We receive $3 for each member visit, up to $30 per month per member. Donna and Eileen have been certified to teach the basic SilverSneakers fitness class and they are also looking into the Yoga and Cardio certifications too. Our account manager told us that March is the best month to get members in the door. The Farmers Market is going well. Attendance slows down after Labor day. The last day is October 13. The next event at the market is Oktoberfest on Sept. 29. Hopefully the weather continues to hold out, we've been pretty lucky this season. 47 children attended Friendship Island this summer. I am very pleased with the way the program operated. The staff was excellent and I didn't get one early morning phone call. The last week of the program was challenging for some of the staff we had left because most of the staff went back to college. They all deserve a big pat on the back. Even with all the fun things to do around MCC it can be tough to keep kids entertained the whole summer. There were a few discipline issues they had to deal with but other than that the parents gave good reviews and many have asked about winter break and next summer already! Event Coordinator - Tricia Menth: © A wedding a couple weeks ago brought in some homemade bars as their centerpiece for each table. We have allowed brides to pick their own person to make their cake. The trend seems to be more than the traditional cake to be cupcakes and cheesecakes. This brought up the question as to are we putting our caterers or MCC at risk if someone were to get sick from a "homemade" cake. I sent out an email to our caterers to get their feelings about letting brides bring in homemade cakes /cupcakes. I heard back from Russell's, Reichel's, Cornerstone and Henrys and all feel that they are not at risk at all. The health dept would do an in -depth investigation and would find where the source came from. They also felt it would be a dis- service to the bride since we do not have any local bakeries or licensed cake businesses. I also called Maple Grove Comm Ctr, Maplewood and Shoreview and they all let them bring in own cakes /dessert. The League of MN Cities felt the same that we are not put at risk. I think it was a good thing to look into but after checking in a little further I think at this time we should leave the policy as is. I am looking into a "cake" waiver that the brides will sign releasing the caterer and MCC from any liabilities. I feel we should not allow dessert "tables" to be brought in with pans of bars or cookies but that could be left to the caterers as we have done in the past. • Have our new staff in and well on their way with training. It's a bit more time consuming with new staff and training but we have a good bunch of new kids. I think when our busy time arrives they will be well up to speed. • Busy couple months with weddings. I have 4 weddings in Sept and 5 in Oct. Will sit down with our new security company in Oct after our wedding season to review their performance and evaluate what can change for next year. One thing I would like to address is our hostesses feel with the size of some of the security guards and lack of confidence in their job they are maybe taken as serious as the Wright County police we being viewed as. I know our hostesses has made comments about one in particular is a really short guy about 125 pounds and people would just basically ignore him and he was not forceful enough to be taken serious. Just some wrinkles to smooth out and make sure this will be the best fit. The supervisor is extremely accommodating to any requests I have made so now that we have one year under our belt with them will be nice to evaluate our needs for next year and ways to improve. • Ball fields are also busy starting youth football on Tues nights and Saturday afternoon and Mens fall softball on Thurs night. These both run till the 2nd week of October. We have had a pretty smooth year out there this year and for Jeremy taking over last minute and really done a good job and has respect from players and umps. I have heard good things about the job he is doing out there. • Room rentals remain busy. Park rentals seem to never slow down but that is a good thing. Director -Kitty Baltos: o As a part of a street project, we had the pavers along Walnut Street replaced with a colored stamped concrete. It looks very nice and will hold up much better than the pavers did. Initially, the project was to redo the pathway around our swan sculpture, however further review, it was decided that it would remain pavers. We salvaged some of the better looking pavers from the street project and our staff will try and pull out the couple dozen bad ones and replace with better ones. After this is done, we will seal the pavers and see how many more years we can get out of them. ® We discussed the annual maintenance work that is usually done in the pool in September, prompting our pool shut down, and felt that all the work we planned could be moved to April /May when the pool is shut down for the mechanical system replacement. We've had 10 years of shutting the pool down right after Labor Day so we're doing some special swim days and pricing to remind and encourage people to come in and use the pool. We will not do a shut down in September 2012, the next shut down for the pool after the one in April /May will be in September 2013. We'd like to see if we can get on an every other year schedule from them on. Becker closes their pool in the even years, so our pool closing in the odd years could work out well for a collaborative use plan. s, September is National Senior Center Month and the theme this year is "It Happens at My Senior Center. My Life. My Time. My Way." We have planned a very busy September to help commemorate Senior Center Month and we hope a lot of people come and see all the great things that happen at the Monticello Senior Center! Here's some of what we have going... The senior center's annual Grandchild Photo Contest will take place this month. People age 55¢ can bring in a picture of their grandchild or great grandchild. The pictures will be displayed for about 10 days. Categories will be "What A Smile," "Cute Kid," "Funny Photo," and "Nice Expression" and we get a local photographer to be our judge. This is a great opportunity for grandparents to show off their grandkids! The election to fill two seats on the senior center Board of Directors will be held on September 16. The terms are for three years, beginning January 1, 2012. Members of the senior center are eligible to vote. Flu & pneumonia shots will be given at the center on Monday, September 19 from 9 -11:30 a.m. The Minnesota Visiting Nurses Association will be administering the shots and they will be able to bill most major insurance companies and Medicare for this service. Spread the word about this immunization clinic please. The Monticello Senior Center and Friends of the Monticello Library are co- sponsoring a program for people of all ages called, "Mark Twain, 100 Years Later." Dave Ehlert will present this 90 minute program in the Monticello Community Center Mississippi Room on Tuesday, September 20 at 3 p.m. There will be time for questions and answers at the end of the program. There is no charge to attend and people of all ages are welcome. The senior center is offering a presentation on September 30 at 10:30 a.m. called, "Remembering the Holocaust." The speaker lived with his family in Germany and they were respected citizens in the village until early in 1933 when Adolf Hitler came to power. From that time on they lived in fear for their lives and in near poverty. Everyone is welcome to attend this event. After taking the summer off, the senior center's bowling league, writing group and singles group will resume meeting. 275 people came to the Pie & Ice Cream Social last month and we were very pleased with the turn -cut. This event is one of four fundraisers the senior center sponsors each year. I'm out of room — thanks for your interest! SEPTEMBER 20, 2011, BUDGET INFORMATION 5d. Old Business: Budget Update. At the last City Council Budget workshop there was no formal recommendation of any budget cuts or what the levy limits might be set at. The Council wanted time to absorb the budget as presented and all of the information that they received at the two budget workshop presentations. The Council will have one more budget workshop on September 12, 2011 and it is expected that they will approve a levy at their regular meeting that same evening. Since I will not be there, I have forwarded to Tom Kelly, our Finance Director, the cuts that we spoke about at our last meeting including the budgeted addition of a splash park. When the Council gives the staff direction, Tom will know the wishes of the community center. 5e. Old Business: Natatorium Improvements. At the Council's August 22, 2011 meeting the Council voted unanimously to approve all of the recommendations from the Building Committee and seconded by the MCC Advisory Board, plus the inclusion of the second floor fitness center addition. Wold Architects is now preparing plans and specs that will be put out for bids. The Building Committee will stay closely involved as this moves forward and provide information to the MCC Advisory Board as it is available. 6. Consideration of a collaborative marketing plan for MCC and FiberNet Monticello. Our direction from Jeff O'Neill, the City's Administrator, is for each department to work collaboratively with FNM to ensure each department's success. This is an easy fit for MCC and FNM. Some of the ideas we've discussed are: ® FNM will help pay for big screen TV's to provide HD television service in the fitness center and a more visible information television system for the main hallway. MCC will promote FNM on the televisions either with promotional flyers or information screens included with facility information. • We will do additional promotion for the fitness center and the facility reminding people to bring their Ipad, or equivalent, to MCC and use FNM fast internet service to download movies, TV shows, etc. while they are working out. • FNM will put a large banner on the east and west ends of the main hallway. • FNM will put an information kiosk at MCC. • FNM will have a MCC membership giveaway included in a service package. The terms of this are yet to be determined. 7. Consideration and review of material options for gymnasium floor replacement. The research on the best product for the gym floor has been time consuming for Brian Weldon, our Maintenance Supervisor. The options include wood, synthetic, poured (which we have now), and it seems we hear about an new option every other day. Brian did speak with Mark Parnell from River City Extreme about synthetic wood floors. They did indicate that their bowling lanes are hard wood with lots of urethane and not a synthetic material. What makes the research more difficult is the multiple uses our gymnasium has. We need to be able to handle spills, heels, heavy foot traffic, and clean up easily and look great forever. Brian will be providing some samples for the Board to review. This is a large project and require a bid process to determine vendor. I thought it would help to discuss the pros and cons of each option that we've identified to date.
