Gilbertson President I for John Slmola Director of Public Works City of Monticello January 19, 2007 For the 2006 crop growing season, soybeans were planted on the West y" and com was planted on the East y" of the field that is the city of Monticello biosolids landspread site in Monticello Township (NE;4 of Sec. 8, T12lN-R25W). Soybean yield measurements were collected by means 0 f a geographically referenced yield monitor mounted on the combine and that yield map is included as part of this report. Soybean variety Pioneer 91Ml3 was planted on the West Y, of the field. Average soybean yield for the West Y, was 48.8 bushels per acre, including the dryland comers. Com yield on the East Y, of the field was 176.4 bushels per acre. Yearly crop yields are listed in table 8 of the report. TEST REPORTS Tests were taken during the growing season to evaluate the soil nutrient status at the site. Soil test results from samples collected in 2006 are presented in tables 1 and 2. The current nutrient levels remain satisfactory for the current crop rotation. Soil test Phosphorus levels spiked in this year's samples relative to the historical readings due in part to the warm and dry early spring. So il test Potassium levels continue to be on the low side of being adequate for optimum yields. Maximum economic yields can only be realized with the addition ofhigher levels of applied commercial Potassium applied as a bulk spread application before planting corn. The dynamics of nitrate-nitrogen, a mobile soil nutrient on the site, were also monitored by various means. Soil nitrate-nitrogen measurements taken in the fall of2006 (table 2), show very high levels of residual nitrate-nitrogen left in the top two feet throughout the field. These levels indicate considerable soil mineralization of nitrogen during the past growing season and the potential to capture some of this residual nitrogen in the 2007 crop. If early season rains in the coming year are not excessive, a significantly larger amount of nitrogen should be available to the developing com and soybeans on the site. Analysis of groundwater monitoring well sites within the field (table 4) indicates that the nitrite + nitrate-nitrogen levels in the two easternmost downgradient monitoring wells (MW-1 0 and MW-13) continue to remain higher than sampling wells MW-7 and MW-11 on the West side of the field. Additionally, the nitrite + nitrate-nitrogen levels in these wells in as well as MW-8 in the interior 0 f the field tend to fluctuate widely from year to year. When analyzed along with late season rainfall data, there is a direct correlation between high nitrite + nitrate-nitrogen levels in the monitoring wells and above average precipitation for the combined months of August, September and October. In years of excessive rainfall during these three months, the nitrite + nitrate-nitrogen levels rise in the downgradient monitoring wells on the site (see table 5). This has been the case in four ofthe last five years. In the early fall, crop water uptake begins to taper and any excessive rainfall has a tendency to flush mobile nutrients such as nitrogen away from the crop roots and lower into the soil profile. Care must be taken to not over-apply fertilizer to the site, especially in light ofthe rather large amount of surface nitrate-nitrogen available to the developing crops as measured in the top two feet of the soil last fall. Commercial nitrogen applications next year will need to be limited to a small amount in the starter fertilizer due to the amount already applied to the field in the form ofbiosolids. WEATHER SUMMARY Daily precipitation (table 6) during the 2006 growing season started out dry in most of April with most ofthe month's total falling the last couple of days. May was warm and dry with only about half the normal precipitation. June continued the trend ofwarmer than average temperatures but moisture was distributed throughout the month. July was very hot and dry with barely over an inch of precipitation for the month during the critical flowering and early reproductive stages of both the com and soybeans planted in the field. July temperatures averaged a blistering 5 degrees warmer than normal for the month. August rains brought some reliefbut not until the middle of the month and then again in the last week. September was slightly cooler than normal, attnlmtable to the consistent rains throughout the month, winding up over 2.25 inches wetter than normal. The irrigation system didn't run at all in September this past year. October was cooler than normal but also drier than normal with just over an inch ofrain falling during the entire month. The combined seasonal rainfall for April through October was 24.16 inches compared to the norma] of22.57 inches at the monitoring site. Most of the surplus came in the month of September. Supplemental irrigation amounts and months of application are presented in table 7 accompanying this report. BIOSOLIDS APPLICATIONS (2005 and 2006) Biosolids were applied to the 34.5 acres ofMon ] and the 34.6 acres ofMon 2 after soybean harvest was completed in the fall of2005. Product was applied between October 13,2005 and October 25, 2005 at an average application rate of9,266 gallons per acre (1.072 dry tons per acre) on Mon] and 8,747 gallons per acre (1.124 dry tons per acre) on Mon 2. The product was then incorporated with a disc to reduce odor and eliminate the chance for off-site movement. Analytical tests performed on the biosolids indicate that a total of 134.0 pounds per acre of nitrogen were supplied to Mon I by this application rate. In addition, there was a carryover nitrogen value from the spring 2005 applications to the same ground of6.9 pounds per acre of nitrogen, for a total of 140.9 pounds nitrogen per acre available to the com grown on Mon I. Tests performed on the biosolids applied to Mon 2 indicate a total of140.5 pounds ofnitrogen supplied. With the carryover of7.5 pounds per acre from the spring 2005 application, a total of 145.0 pounds per acre of nitrogen was available for com use on Mon 2 during the 2006 cropping year. Supplemental commercial fertilizer nitrogen (supplied as com starter and a sidedress application) was applied at 80 pounds per acre on both Mon I and Mon 2 to the com crop. Mon 3 and Mon 4 (the West Y, of the field) were spread with biosolids in the spring of2006 in preparation for planting soybeans in that portion of the field in 2006. Biosolids were applied to Mon 3 and Mon 4 from April II, 2006 to April 21, 2006 and incorporated with a disc. An average of7,379 gallons per acre (1.351 dry tons per acre) ofbiosolids were applied to Mon 3, and test results indicate that 161.3 pounds ofnitrogen were supplied to the 2006 soybean crop in this area from this application. With a carryover credit of 16.4 pounds nitrogen from the spring 2005 application, the total nitrogen available to the soybeans from biosolids was 177.7 pounds per acre in this area of the field. Biosolids were applied to Mon 4 at an average of8,943 gallons per acre (1.175 dry tons per acre), and test results indicate that 140.3 pounds of nitrogen were supplied to the soybean crop in 2006 in this area from this application. With a carryover credit of 16.8 pounds nitrogen from the spring 2005 application, the total nitrogen available to the soybeans from biosolids was 157.1 pounds per acre in this area of the field. Biosolids were applied to the 35. I acres ofMon 3 and the 35.7 acres ofMon 4 after soybean harvest was completed in the fall of2006. Biosolids were applied between October 11, 2006 and October 26, 2006 and incorporated with a disc to reduce odor and eliminate the chance for off-site movement. An average of8,939 gallons per acre (1.247 dry tons per acre) were applied to Mon 3, and test results indicate 145.9 pounds per acre of nitrogen will be available to next year's com in this area of the field from the application. Carryover nitrogen from the previous year's application of 17.4 pounds per acre added to the 145.9 pounds bring the total pounds of nitrogen available to the com of163.3 pounds per acre. An average of9,599 gallons per acre (1.105 dry tons per acre) were applied to Mon 4, and test results show 129.2 pounds per acre of nitrogen available to the com in this area of the field from the application. Carryover nitrogen from the previous year's application of 15. I pounds per acre added to the 129.2 pounds bring the total pounds of nitrogen available to the com of144.3 pounds per acre. These applications will fulfill the com nitrogen requirements for the coming year with a small amount of nitrogen being supplied to the com crop at planting in the form of a starter band of commercial fertilizer. Biosolids will be applied to Mon ] and Mon 2 next spring prior to planting soybeans in those areas 0 f the field. Results The results of the analyses are :rummarized in Table 1 below. For complete analytical results, please refer to the Laboratory Report sheets attached to this letter. All of the analyses were performed using United States Environmental Protection Agency or other recognized standard procedures.
