Library Board Minutes 05-17-2006MONTICELLO LIBRARY BOARD
MINUTES
MAY 17, 2006
Present: Tom Parker, Ralph Olsen, Debra Luken, Jacque Gordon, Board Members
Joan Allen, Supervisor GRRL, Parker McDonald, Artist
Parker presented his proposal for an outdoor sculpture for the library. (See attached.)
The sculpture would include recycled components from the original Brasie Library which
was in Oakwood School. The girl's figure would be welded capper to blend with the
clack tower and the City Hall. The cost of this sculpture, including the base, would be
$8,000. When Parker receives 1/3 of the total cast, he will start production. If he can
start about July 1, the sculpture could be in place in October 2006.
The Board decided to proceed with this project with the understanding that the Friends of
Monticello Library, in collaboration with the Monticello Arts Council, would raise the
funds. The Board cansidered possible placements sites and decided to wait to decide on
exact placement.
The Board members present committed to participate in fund-raising. Jacque will meet
with Lynne Dahl-Fleming of Monticello Arts Council to get the project started. Ralph
will work with them on afund-raising plan. Tom suggested that a brochure be designed
and be ready for distribution next week. Jacque agreed to contact Lynne about designing
this brochure.
Librarian's Re ort Debra Luken, Branch Librarian, distributed a summary of usage
statistics for afive-year period. (See attached) The statistics show that there are about 77
checkouts every hour that the library is open. Joan has requested that the GRRL Board
increase Monticello Library's hours by 5 to 8 hours per week. This would cost about
$21, 496 annually. It is not likely that this will be approved for 2007. As a Library
Board, we can let the GRRL Director Kirsty Smith know that we support additional hours
for our increasingly busy library. Board members agreed to invite Ms. Smith to meet
with us. Budget requests must be submitted by July far the coming calendar year.
City of Monticello staff has requested that the City Council consider an additional change
order, estimated at $2,000 t $3,000, to complete and correct the circulation desk. This
will be cansidered at the next Council meeting on Monday, May 22, 2006. Tam and
Jacque will attend this meeting.
Friends of Monticello Library. Jacque gave an informal report on Friends' activities.
The next meeting of this Board is scheduled for 5:00 p.m. on Monday, June 19, 2006.
