MONTICELLO LIBRARY BOARD
Thursday, June 11, 1981 - 6:30 P.M.
Monticello City Hall
Temporary Chairman: Loren Klein
Members Present: Marge Bauer, Pat Schwarz, Donald Maus, Joel Erickson
Irwin Kallin
1. The first order of business at this organizational meeting was to
elect a chairman and a secretary. Loren Klein was elected presi-
dent and Marge Bauer was elected secretary. Both terms will expire
December 31, 1981.
2. There was some discussion as to when the best time would be to
hold our board meetings. Early breakfast meetings were suggested
and Wednesday mornings at 6:30 A.M. at Perkins was determined to
be the best for most members of the board.
3. The board will use Roberts Rules of Order as their by-laws.
.
4. There was discussion as to the Monticello Library Board's involve-
ment in the decor and furnishings of the new library which is due
to be completed in early December. It was pointed out that the
Monticello City Council has retained the right to final approval
on any suggestions pertaining to these items. It was suggested
that the board visit other libraries in the area for ideas as to
carpeting, Shelving, etc.
5. Loren informed the board of the change order for the heating system
in the new public library as authorized by the City Council on
Monday, June 8, 1981. The system originally planned was an electri-
cal heat pump system, but will be changed to a natural gas furnance.
6. A budget is to be formulated by August 1, 1981 for submission to the
City Council. Included in this budget will be estimates for utility
costs and money should be allocated for additional books, library
programs and equipment such as typewriters, copy machine, etc.
7. It was suggested that the administration of the Great River Regional
Library be invited to the next meeting for the purpose of explaining
to the board members the general structure of the system, how it is
funded and what Monticello can expect to receive as far as books and
services with the advent of the new library. This meeting is tenta-
tively scheduled for wednesday, July 8, 1981 at 6:30 P.M. at city
Hall.

8. Custodian care for the new public library was discussed briefly.
It was suggested that Ed Lang would be interested in the position
since everyone at City Hall seems to be saitisfied with his work.
9. Various concerns were voiced pertaining to the Great River Regional
Library system and some of its policies and procedures. Loren Klein
stated that in the past, Monticello has contributed 20 to 25% of the
funding from wright County and has received about 6% back in books
and services. Concern over the lack of books in the present facility
and possible lack of books in the new facility was mentioned. It was
suggested that we take an aggressive stand by writing a letter to
the Great River Regional Library stating what we will need at the time
the new library opens. The general concensus was to hold back as far
as actual "gripes" until Great River has been given a chance to deliver.
There was also some discussion regarding the acceptance of books do-
nated to the library which would remain at the Monticello Library and
then setting up a separate card catalogue for such books.
10. It was suggested that the Monticello Library Board look into the
possibility of having a representative on the board of trustees of
the Great River Regional Library.
.
11. The meeting closed with a review of the architect's plans for the
new public library. One question posed for further investigation
was the dangerous crossing at Walnut and 4th Street caused mainly
by the employee parking in front of Decorative Services.
