Library Board Minutes 12-10-2013MINUTES OF THE LIBRARY BOARD MEETING Tuesday, December 10, 2013 5:30 p.m. Members present: Branch Manager Deb Luken, Janet Bridgland, Sandra Lommel, Beth Metzger, Elaine Settergren, Patron Services Supervisor Brandi Cantor. Minutes of the last meeting approved New Business: • Concern about the problem of theft of DVD's • Software will be available soon that will allow patrons to pay fines with a swipe card. Library Report — Deb Luken: • Circulation from January to November 2013 deceased over 16,000 items. This was a 7% decrease for the same period in 2012. This decrease is a trend that public libraries are experiencing, possibly due to tablets, smart phones and the uptick in the economy. • 132 programs with 2,628 children and teens attending were paid for with City dollars from January - November 2013. This does not include 840 participants in the Summer Reading Program or the Legacy programs which were an additional 14 programs with 850 participants. City funded programs deal primarily with babies, toddlers, preschoolers and teens. We appreciate the generosity of the City for these programs. 266 children are signed up for 1000 Books Before Kindergarten. Financial support is provided by GRRL, the City and the Friends. • The library received a self check -out machine from GRRL in October 2013 to assist patrons in checking out their own materials. • GRRL is providing a system wide Events Guide for all of the programs offered throughout the region. • Deb Luken and the Community is very appreciative of the generous financial support of the City of Monticello and is hopeful for their continued support. • GRRL Event Guide for November — December handed out to board members. Patron Services Supervisor Report Brandi Cantor: • Comp and Class study was completed and approved at the November board meeting. New pay ranges take effect 1/1/14 for non - bargaining unit staff. Those in bargaining units will be negotiating the specifics with their contact. In October and November GRRL held community meetings with city and county officials throughout the region. Wright County meeting was October 17 and the Sherburne County meeting was November 14th. These meetings provided a chance for city and county officials to meet with GRRL staff, share ideas and get their questions answered. • GRRL Fast Facts: GRRL covers 4,913 square miles Encompasses 43 school districts 32 libraries, 9 are in Wright County Wright County population of 127,336 and 37,519 are library cardholders • GRRL Adds Value to Central Minnesota Communities Information services, computers and digital access Provides programs, books, magazines, DVD's, Music CD's 968,139 items valued at $17,686,204 — average item is $18.27 In 2012, 1,200,582 items were loaned in Wright County with a value of $21,934,633 448,760 visits to libraries in Wright County in 2012 Approximately half of visits result in checkouts 199,271 checkout sessions in 2012 Minnesota Public Libraries Return on Investment study findings For every $1 spent by community on library, it receives $4.62 return on investment Arts and Cultural Heritage funds spent by Wright County Libraries 2012 Legacy expenditure = $63,240 2009 — 2014 Legacy expenditure = $319,250 Confirm dates for Library Board meetings in 2014: March 11, 2014 June 10, 2014 September 9, 2014 December 9, 2014 Next meeting will be Tuesday, March 11 at 5:30 p.m. Meeting adjourned at 6:00 p.m. Respectfully submitted, Sandra Lommel, Secretary
