Consideration of recommending appointment of Jim Roberts to the Police Advisory

A. REFERENCE AND BACKGROUND:
On October 17t" the Police Advisory Commission voted to hold a special meeting on
November 14`h to allow Commissioner Fradella to meet and interview Mr. Roberts prior to
voting whether to recommend his appointment to the Police Advisory Commission to the
City Council. Mr. Roberts has since confirmed his attendance at tonight's special meeting.
As was discussed on October 1711, Mr. Roberts previously served on the PAC from January
2007 to July 2010, during which time he served with each of the current Commissioners
except Commissioner Fradella. Each of the other Commissioners voiced their approval of
Mr. Roberts' appointment to the PAC at the October 17`h regular PAC meeting, but agreed to
hold a special meeting tonight to allow Commissioner Fradella the opportunity to meet with
Mr. Roberts in person before voting to recommend his appointment.
As was also noted on October 17th, Mr. Roberts resigned his seat from the PAC in 2010 due
to his pending military deployment, but since such time he has returned from his deployment
and has submitted his application to the PAC, which is attached for reference.
Tonight the Commission is being asked to consider recommending Mr. Roberts' appointment
to the PAC for consideration by the City Council on November 26th. This of course assumes
the PAC will not request Mr. Roberts to submit to a criminal background check considering
his previous appointment to the PAC, as well as his current employment by the Golden
Valley Police Department and his recent military assignment. However, if the PAC requests
Mr. Roberts to submit to a criminal background check the PAC's recommendation will be
presented to the City Council at the next City Council meeting following the receipt of his
background check results.
Since the term of the vacant seat that Mr. Roberts' is seeking to fill expires on December 31,
2012, Council will be asked to ratify his appointment through December 31, 2015.
