"To enhance community pride through developing and maintaining City parks with a high standard of quality. " Members Present: Larry Nolan, Nancy McCaffrey, Brian Stoll Members Absent: Jack Gregor, Tim Stalpes, Brian Stumpf, Council Liaison Staff Present: Tom Pawelk, Beth Green 1. Call to Order. Chair Larry Nolan called the meeting to order at 7:30 a.m. and declared a quorum present. 2. Motion of placing a piece of public art at City View Park mountain bike trail head. Tom Pawelk introduced Sue Seeger, a metal sculpture artist who is interested in partnering with the City to unveil her art in a public park. Seeger said that she has received an Artist Initiative Grant from the Minnesota Arts Council to create a public sculpture from metal bike parts. The stipulation for complying with the grant is for her to partner with a public partner to unveil and promote the artwork. This has been an ongoing planning process for over two years and the biking community is in support of the art and has donated bike parts for the project. Many people are asking where the art will be and Seeger noted that it will bring a lot of positive attention to the parks in Monticello. Seeger reviewed her sculptures and current artwork with the commission and noted that she is planning a life size sculpture of a deer in motion. The sculpture is made out of stainless steel rods and is mounted in the ground on a 14 -gauge metal post with a cement base. There is no maintenance required on the art. Pawelk is suggesting the sculpture to be placed at City View Park which will be the future site of a mountain bike challenge course. The grant deadline is February 2017; however, Seeger said that she will begin work at the end of July (if approved) and will plan for installation at the end of October or early November. Pawelk said that as part of the grant requirement, the City will plan an unveiling of the art and invite the press and public to attend the ceremony.
